A birthday in a forest clearing: 7 ideas for 10–50 guests
One birthday — seven very different celebrations
In a restaurant, the script is often already written for you: guests sit at the table, courses come and go, and the host announces the next item. In the forest, things begin differently. There is no need to fill every minute. The path between the trees, the daylight, the scent of the forest, pauses in conversation and the moment guests suddenly realise they have not checked the time for hours all become part of the celebration.
The NAMETY Forest Clearing is at VDNG in Kyiv. For events with up to 30 guests, the daytime format is “Forest Clearing + Male Lito”; for 31 to 50 guests, only exclusive hire of NAMETY is available. This is neither a restaurant styled to look like nature nor a random picnic spot. It is a forest venue beneath a real canopy, where the day can be built around people rather than a familiar banquet routine.
Both formats are booked by the day, not by the hour. Access to the grounds is from 10:00 to 23:00, with the active event taking place from 12:00 to 22:00.
Below are seven ideas for the atmosphere and the way people spend time together, rather than seven service packages. The exact capacity, booking inclusions, food, décor and work by external suppliers must be agreed separately. The aim here is to help you imagine the birthday itself.
1. Brunch with your closest people: 10–12 guests
This format suits people who do not want a “big event”, but still want the day to feel special. You could gather around midday: one table, flowers or branches in simple vases, seasonal food, coffee and long conversations.
Ten people do not need an elaborate programme or an event host. One shared ritual is enough: everyone brings a photograph with the birthday person, reads a short letter or tells a story that only the two of them remember. In the forest, these moments feel more natural than formal toasts over a microphone.
After the meal, some guests can take a walk, while a small group could have a separately booked sauna or hot tub session, if the desired time is available. This extends the celebration within an agreed capacity; it is not a simultaneous activity for the whole party.
2. A long table and plenty of stories: 14–20 guests
This is a birthday for a group where everyone knows one another in some way. One long table becomes the focal point, and the gathering itself becomes the main event. Instead of a dozen party games, prepare a few conversation starters: old photographs, questions about shared adventures or a short playlist of music from different years.
This format works particularly well in the latter half of the day. At first, the forest is filled with light; then the colours soften, and towards evening the space feels quite different. There is no need to rush to the cake immediately after the main course. Give guests time to move from the table to a walk and back again.
3. A family celebration across generations: 18–25 guests
When children, parents and older relatives gather around one table, the most important thing is a comfortable pace, rather than spectacle. Not everyone wants to sit all the time, but an active programme will not suit everyone either. It is better to picture the clearing as a setting for different kinds of time together: a shared meal, an unhurried walk, photographs and a quiet conversation in a smaller group.
Ask the NAMETY team in advance about everything that matters to your particular guests: the route to the clearing, access to the facilities they need, opportunities to take a break and plans for the weather. This is more honest and useful than relying on a general promise of “comfort”.
One simple idea works well for a family day: ask each generation to prepare a small surprise for the birthday person. It gives the celebration a story without turning it into a performance.
4. A day with friends and a separately booked sauna or hot tub: 20–24 guests
Imagine guests arriving during a relaxed gathering period, rather than all at once for an official start. Some sit at the table straight away, some go for a walk, and others finally meet friends from another part of your life. After lunch, a small part of the group has a separately booked sauna or hot tub session, while everyone else stays in the clearing.
This is an important principle: a sauna at VDNG does not have to be somewhere everyone heads at once. Ask in advance who really wants to take part, then agree the available time and capacity with NAMETY. That way, there is no queue and the main celebration does not come to a standstill while people wait.
For a day like this, it helps to appoint one person to remind people of the time without directing them every minute. Their job is to protect the pace, not dictate it.
5. A birthday that brings different circles together: 25–30 guests
Childhood friends, colleagues, family and neighbours may be meeting for the first time. Around a conventional banquet table, people often stay in their own small groups. The Forest Clearing offers more reasons to move around and talk to different people.
Help people get to know one another without putting them under pressure. Instead of a game with rules, place cards near the entrance with short facts about the birthday person and ask guests to find someone who knows the rest of each story. Or create a shared album: everyone leaves a sentence, a drawing or a wish. It gives people a way to connect without making anyone feel part of a compulsory competition.
For 25–30 guests, it becomes important to think beyond a beautiful table to how people move around, food service timings, music and somewhere for personal belongings. The forest remains the main decoration, but the organisation needs the precision you would expect in a city venue.
6. A sunset dinner with exclusive hire: 31–40 guests
From 31 guests, only exclusive hire of NAMETY is available: the whole site is reserved for one group for the duration of the event. This idea is built around the changing light. Guests arrive during the day, dinner is towards evening, and birthday wishes are shared in the soft twilight. As the forest grows darker, the setting feels more intimate, even with several dozen people at the table.
Lighting, sound and the ending deserve particularly careful planning here. Do not try to make the forest look like a nightclub. Warm light in selected areas and music quiet enough for people to hear one another better suit the character of the place.
Exclusive hire includes all five cabins for two, but their total overnight capacity is up to ten people. Other guests will need a separate plan for getting home. For those closest to you, a morning in the forest becomes a quiet continuation of the celebration, rather than a promise of an overnight stay for the whole party.
7. A large forest celebration with exclusive hire: 41–50 guests
For 41–50 guests, only exclusive hire of NAMETY is available as well. It includes all five cabins and one “sauna + two hot tubs” session lasting up to two hours. This means more than “a slightly larger table”: the day needs a clear arrival plan, people responsible for food, sound and the running of the event, and a plan agreed in advance for a change in the weather.
To keep the gathering feeling lively and natural, there is no need to add more entertainment. It is better to create a few natural gathering points: a place for the shared dinner, a space for birthday wishes, a quieter spot for conversation and a clear ending. What guests most often remember is not the number of items on the programme, but evening light between the trees and a conversation they finally had time for.
How to choose your own plan
Start with three questions, rather than the number of decorations:
- How do you want guests to feel: close as a family, at ease among friends or caught up in the energy of a big celebration?
- Which three moments of the day matter most to you?
- Who will stay until the end, who will want to use the sauna or hot tub, and who will want to stay overnight?
The answers will soon show whether you need a morning table for ten, a leisurely dinner for thirty or an event for all fifty. The forest does not demand an elaborate concept. It only asks that you give people room to be together.
Planning an event? Tell the NAMETY team how many guests you expect, who you are inviting and how you want to remember the day. For up to 30 guests, we will discuss the clearing with Male Lito and any available extras; for 31 to 50, exclusive hire, overnight stays within the capacity of the five cabins and the included sauna and hot tub session.
