A date without phones: an evening for two in a forest sauna

A perfect date does not always need a new show, an elaborate menu or tickets to an event. Sometimes all it takes is a place where two people finally stop looking at separate screens. A forest sauna does just that: it clears away distractions and gives you the evening back.

NAMETY is set among the trees at VDNG — within Kyiv, yet with the feeling of a short escape. You can walk along forest paths, warm up in a wood-fired sauna for two, take an outdoor shower, sit with a cup of tea and finish the evening by the fire. Together, these can make a date without phones feel like a small luxury.

Why it helps to put phones away before you begin

A phone gets in the way of a date even when nobody is constantly replying to messages. A screen lying on the table keeps part of our attention on standby. We wait for a notification, check the time without thinking and consider the photograph before we have experienced the moment.

Agree on one simple rule: take a few pictures at the beginning or the end, and leave the rest of the time free of screens. There is no need for a grand declaration of digital detox. Just put your phones in a bag and leave the sound on only for a truly important call.

An unhurried evening, step by step

1. Begin with a walk

Do not head straight into the sauna after a traffic jam or your last work call. Ten to fifteen minutes of walking in the forest helps you notice who you are with and where you have arrived. You could agree not to discuss work until your first cup of tea — the world will usually keep turning.

2. Keep your first session short

In a sauna for two, there is nobody to impress. Sit on a lower bench, start with moderate warmth and step out as soon as you feel like it. The right duration depends on how you feel, rather than a stopwatch. Afterwards, let your body cool down gently in the fresh air or use the outdoor shower.

3. Try hot-and-cold contrast only if you both want to

There are cold plunge tubs and outdoor drench buckets on the grounds. They can add a vivid sensation, but they are not a test for a couple to pass. Sudden immersion in cold water causes cold shock: breathing, heart rate and blood pressure change sharply for a short time. Beginners should start with a cool shower, keep their heads above water and never push one another in “for courage”.

4. The tea break is part of the date

After the warmth, conversation often slows down. There is no need to fill every pause. Instead of “How are things?”, you might ask what has brought a sense of calm recently, or where you would like to travel without a plan. Tea is available at NAMETY; drink water regularly throughout the evening as well.

5. Finish by the fire

If your time and booking format allow, end the date by the fire area. The flames give your eyes something to follow without asking for a response. It is a rare way to spend another half-hour together without searching for the next topic of conversation.

What to bring

  • swimwear and a dry change of clothes;
  • a bottle of water, even if you plan to drink tea;
  • warm socks or comfortable footwear for outdoor breaks in colder weather;
  • a hair tie for long hair;
  • one simple intention: to take your time.

Do not use the sauna after drinking alcohol, when you feel unwell or if you have a fever. If either of you has cardiovascular disease, unstable blood pressure, is pregnant or has another condition that heat or cold could affect, speak to a doctor beforehand.

What to talk about once the phones are away

Silence on a date sometimes feels awkward only for the first five minutes. You do not need to turn the evening into a psychological interview. A few questions that invite more than a one-word answer are enough:

  • which day from the past month you would like to live again;
  • which place in Kyiv still feels peaceful to you;
  • what you would like to learn without trying to turn it into an income;
  • what kind of trip you could take together at a very slow pace;
  • what you could stop doing to leave more space in your life.

You can also ask no questions at all. Listening to the stove, taking a shower and looking out at the forest together are ways of being close too.

A screen-free date should not become a challenge

The point of the evening is not to work through five steps and assess the result at the end. If one of you likes a hotter sauna and the other is happy with a short session, there is no problem to solve. You can step out together or give each other a few minutes at your own pace. Equally, there is no need to use the cold plunge or drench bucket, or to spend the whole time in silence.

It helps to agree on just three things beforehand: when you will take photographs, roughly how much time you would like after the final sauna session, and anything you definitely do not want to do. Leave the rest unscripted. A date feels more intimate when there is no rush or pressure.

How the seasons change the date

In autumn, the scent of damp leaves makes stepping out of the sauna particularly memorable. In winter, bring dry, warm clothing and do not stay outside until you are shivering hard. The forest grows lighter in spring, while in summer the sauna works well in the evening as the air begins to cool. A summer sauna is not a contradiction: a short, controlled session of warmth followed by a shower can feel more pleasant than spending hours in a stuffy city.

How to make the date last longer

You can combine a sauna session with a stay in one of NAMETY’s designer cabins. Then there is no need to return to the city’s pace after the evening warmth: a shower, quiet, the forest outside your window and a slow morning become part of the same date.

Access to the fire area, plunge tubs, drench buckets and other facilities depends on your chosen format and time. Before your visit, ask the team what your booking includes and what needs to be arranged separately. That leaves room for spontaneity while avoiding unwelcome surprises.
